Crosstable R2 of the 2026 Viv Greenelsh Memorial played on Wed night Mar 18
Please find attached the Round 2 crosstable for the2026 Viv Greenelsh Memorial, played on Wednesday night, March 18.
Round 2 Summary:
After two rounds of the 2026 Viv Greenelsh Memorial, five players have managed to win both their games to move to 2/2; Filip Simic, Andrew Davison, David Pando, Jai Turner and Rohan Pyne. These players are closely followed by five more players on 1.5/2 in what promises to be another competitive affair at Rothwell! The tournament participation was bolstered by several players entering Round 2 after their half-point Round 1 byes, as well as a few past members coming out of the woodwork; it was great to see the likes of Michael D’Arcy and PJ Bargo return.
On board 1, top seed David Pando overcame Allan Fossey via an opening trick with the white side of a French Defence. Jai Turner is back to his winning ways after a rough patch by dispatching rising junior Nikola Maljkovic armed with his trusty London System. Probably the game of the night occured on board 3 between Filip Simic (outright winner of the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss) and David Beaumont (winner of the 2025 Club Championship). The under-rated Simic navigated a complicated middlegame to develop a strong passed pawn in the endgame, and just when it looked like the pawn was unstoppable, David found some incredible defensive resources with his knight and rook which eventually liquidated the position to a Rook and pawns position. With both players playing on increment by this point, it was Filip who held his composure to land the final blow of the match! Well done, all!
Next Round – Round 3 – 8:00PM Wednesday 25 March:
The pairings will be finalised at 8PM sharp so please try to be at Rothwell by 7:45PM to ensure a timely start to the round. Feel free to arrive as early as 7PM for social chess!

Round 6 Summary:
Filip Simic is the outright winner of the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss! Congratulations, Filip!
Filip won his final round game against CAQ President CM Tony Dowden to move to 5/6 (5 wins and 1 loss). David Pando and Nikola Maljkovic, the two other co-leaders going into the final round, drew their board 1 game in what can be an upset result for the under-rated Maljkovic who has proven he can match it with the best players at the club. Also finishing on 4.5/6 and in a tie for second was Rohan Pyne who defeated a somewhat out-of-sorts Allan Fossey who started the tournament in impressive form and will no doubt come back stronger in the next tournament. Following these players on 4/6 were Tony Truscott and Mark C Stokes, two RCC veterans. Congratulations all on a great tournament that was played in high spirits. With a total of 41 players playing at least 1 round of the tournament, the 2026 numbers are looking strong and we hope they continue to rise.

Please find attached the Round 5 crosstable for the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss, played on Wednesday night, February 25.
Round 5 Summary:
There are now three joint leaders on 4 out of 5! David Pando, Nikola Maljkovic and Filip Simic have all played terrific, fighting chess this tournament and will head into the final round with a share of the lead. As David and Filip have already played this tournament, David is likely to play talented and resilient junior Nikola Maljkovic on the top board of the final round! With a further 4 players on 3.5/5, the podium spots are well and truly up for grabs! This has been one of the more competitive classical tournaments in recent years at RCC and it is great to see so many under-rated players improving their games and challenging the top seeds.
Please see the attachments for the R5 cross-table and results. A more comprehensive tournament summary will be provided after the final round. Good luck, everyone!

Crosstable R4 of the 2026 Summer Swiss played on Wed night Feb 18
Please find attached the Round 4 crosstable for the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss, played on Wednesday night, February 18.
Round 4 Summary:
We have a new leader in the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss! David Pando defeated Allan Fossey on board 1 to move into the sole lead on 3.5/4! David played a very solid positional game and slowly turned the screws. Allan managed to defend well and extend the game well into the night, but these efforts were to no avail as David calmly converted his endgame advantage. This win leaves David well-poised at the top of the field however with as many as 8 players trailing by only half a point (3/4) and two rounds still to play, the tournament is still wide open! Well done, David.
Jai Turner will consider himself lucky to walk away with half a point against Mark C Stokes, slyly offering a draw in a position he knew was dead lost! Mark, in severe time trouble with only 20 seconds left on the clock, decided to shake hands and walk away with the draw. He was immediately met with some rather cruel spectator observations pointing out several winning lines, but of course it is much harder to spot these in the heat of battle with mere seconds remaining on the clock! Despite not scoring the full point, Mark can be pleased with his play in this game as he capitalised on an opening mistake from Jai and slowly built a dominant position.
The upset of the year occured on board 3, with Libor Spacek overcoming an 806 rating point gulf to defeat David Beamont. David sacrificed material for what looked to be a very promising attack, hwever Libor defended well and managed to halt David’s forces by forcing an exchange of queens, leaving him with two rooks to one and an easily won endgame. Well done, Libor! Definitely the dark-horse of the tournament.
Congatulations to all the winners across the 13 boards of action!
Round 5 – 8:00PM Wednesday (tonight) 25 Feb:
Round 5 will begin at 8pm tonight, Wednesday February 25. Look forward to another round of exciting chess!

Crosstable R2 of the 2026 Summer Swiss played on Wed night Feb 4
Please find attached the Round 2 crosstable for the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss, played on Wednesday night, February 4.
The new-year numbers continue to grow, with 32 players fronting up for round 2 on Wednesday night, bringing the total entries for the tournament to 36! It is exciting to see so many new faces tossing their hat in the ring to test their wit against the host of regular members.
Round 2 Summary:
Top seed David Pando played black against Filip Simic, with both players opting for solid positional setups. As the middlegame progressed, it appeared that the position was roughly equal, however David had a growing advantage on the clock, with Filip down to less than 10 minutes of his allotted time. This proved pivotal, as David was soon able to capitalise as the position complicated and when the dust settled, he converted a technically won endgame into the full point.
The upset of the round occurred on board 2, where Allan Fossey dismantled David Beaumont with a swashbuckling King’s Indian, one of the sharpest variations in chess. Allan won an exchange early in the game courtesy of a tactical sequence, and appeared to be well on his way to victory. David managed to threaten counterplay with several well-coordinated knight maneuvers. Aware of the potential for imminent danger, Allan made the pragmatic decision to sacrifice the exchange back, the resulting trades giving him connected passed pawns. Allan converted his endgame advantage in fine style, using his bishop to trap David’s knight on the edge of the board. You can see this game and several more on the RCC website at: City of Redcliffe Chess Club Inc.
On board 3, Rohan Pyne was white against Tony Truscott. Tony countered Rohan’s Botvinnik English with a solid setup featuring pawns on c5, d6 and e6. The players began expanding on opposite sides of the board, with Tony countering Rohan’s kingside pushes with his own on the queenside. Several exchanges resulted in great optical changes to the position, Rohan now having connected passed pawns on the b and c file but his progress was stymied by Tony’s pawn mass in the centre of the board. Uncertain of the best way to proceed, Rohan blundered a pawn but managed to complicate the position. Tony played calmly, defending against an array of tactics and eventually finished the game through some nice tactics of his own after Rohan blundered once more, albeit this time in severe time trouble.
The remaining boards also featured plenty of fighting chess, with several games lasting long into the evening, well past the bedttime of many! The only draw of the evening occured between Tony Weller and Aaron Hamilton. It is refreshing to see such enterprising chess on display! Well done to all the winners!
Round 3 – 8:00PM Wednesday 11 Feb:
Round 3 will begin at 8pm this Wednesday night, February 11. Look forward to another round of exciting chess!

Crosstable R1 of the 2026 Summer Swiss played on Wed night Jan 28
Please find attached the Round 1 crosstable for the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss, played on Wednesday night, January 28.
Round 1 Summary:
Last Wednesday night saw Redcliffe Chess Club re-open its doors for the commencement of the 2026 chess season. The first event on the calendar is the Summer Swiss, a 6 round ACF and QJ rated classical tournament featuring a time control of 60mins plus 20secs per move or 30+30 for the juniors. The attendance numbers continue to be strong, with a total of 27 players presenting for the first round. The field was headlined by top seeds David Pando (ACF 1995) and CM David Beaumont (1767 ACF), and with CM Tony Dowden and Jai Turner (both under-rated 1700s) likely to join the tournament for round 2, this promises to be a very competitive affair with plenty of depth in the field.
On board 1, Tony Weller was sceptical of the Vega pairing system as he was yet again matched against the top seed, this time having the black pieces against David Pando. From the little the author saw of this game, it appeared that David obtained a positional advantage during the middle-game, fragmenting Tony’s pawn structure and, whilst materially equal, it became a difficult position for Tony to hold against a strong player. David was his usual clinical self in converting this advantage into the full point to start his 2026 on a winning note. The top boards didn’t feature a single upset as the other top seeds also justified their higher ratings in winning their games. In fact, there were no drawn games across the 13 boards! Well done to all the winners and thank you to Cedric Schaffer for selflessly accepting his round 1 bye due to the odd number of players. A friendly reminder to all that pairings will be finalised at 8PM sharp each round!
Round 2 – 8:00PM Wednesday 4 Feb:
Round 2 will begin at 8pm this Wednesday night, February 4. Look forward to another round of exciting chess!

Final Round crosstable of the 2025 Club Championship played on Wed night December 10
David Beaumont is the 2025 Redcliffe Chess Club champion!
CM Beaumont defeated Tony Truscott in a high-stakes, winner-takes-all contest on board 1. This caps off a great year of chess for David, having already been victorious in the Peninsula Open and the QLD Seniors championship earlier this year. Congratulations, David!
Round 7 Summary:
David countered Tony’s pet Colle System with an early c5 and kingside-fianchetto and whilst Tony developed a significant space advantage on the queenside, his pieces began to lack coordination. David’s well-marshalled troops started to target key squares and pawns in the white camp, using the open a and c files expertly. A well-timed b5 advance undermined white’s pawn front and David was soon up a pawn and in complete control of the position. A crafty “zwischenzug” Ne4! saw David put one hand on the trophy as Tony’s chances were reduced to swindles. David held his composure and the result was soon beyond salvage for Tony, justifiably resigning the game in an endgame where black’s bishop-pair and two extra pawns would have been too much to handle for his rook.
This was Tony’s first and only loss for the tournament, coming up just short of the title but still managing a share of second place with pre-tournament favourite Jai Turner, who despite a strong campaign will have to wait another year for a chance to win an elusive club championship. (Jai has won just about every other tournament this year!) Congratulations to Tony and Jai for a fantastic tournament!
Please see the attachments for full round 7 results and the final crosstable. Well done to all players for their efforts across the tournament, both over the chess board and in ensuring the club continues to provide a welcoming environment.

Crosstable R6 of the 2025 Club Championship played on Wed night December 3
Please find attached the Round 6 crosstable for the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship, played on Wednesday night, December 3.
Round 6 Summary:
The 2025 Redcliffe club championship is now a 2-horse race! Tony Truscott and David Beaumont both won their round 6 games to move to 5.5/6 and 5/6 respectively. After stellar campaigns these two players are now set to face each other in a final round showdown where a draw will be enough for Tony to be crowned champion and David will require a win; this promises to be an exciting battle! In round 6, Tony defeated Allan Fossey with the black pieces, the two long-time RCC members trading blows over the course of a long game until Allan made a decisive error in mutual time trouble which gave Tony an edge towards the end of the middlegame. Tony displayed excellent endgame technique, his strongest asset, in converting his advantage into the full point. On board 2, CM David Beaumont was tested by the experienced Greg Orme in another long encounter that had the “evaluation bar” swinging wildly to both sides before David finally iced the victory with only seconds remaining on his clock! On board 3, Jai Turner sprung an opening surprise on club president Mark C Stokes and quickly gained an advantage. Mark fought hard and tried to create complications over the board, however Jai remained composed and finished the game with a nice tactical combination to move to 4.5/6 and in a great position to finish on the podium with one round to play. Please see the attachment for full round 6 results. Congratulations, all!

Crosstable R5 of the 2025 Club Championship played on Wed night November 26
Please find attached the Round 5 crosstable for the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship, played on Wednesday night, November 26.
Round 5 Summary:
Tony Truscott is now the outright leader in the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship! On board 1, Jai Turner suffered his first loss of the tournament, falling victim to Allan Fossey’s sharp opening preparation and tactical eye. As white, Allan thrusted his c, d, e and h pawns forward to combat Jai’s trusty Modern defence, and after sacrificing a couple of pawns, soon had great attacking chances against Jai’s king. Jai managed to defend well, and despite having a cramped position, was 3 pawns up and hoping to exchange pieces into what would be a winning endgame. Allan continued to build pressure before the game came to an abrupt conclusion when Jai missed a surprise queen check that resulted in a checkmate. You can see this game on the Redcliffe chess club website: Club Championship Games. I am hoping to add many other games soon! If you would like your game added, simply reply to this email. On board 2, Tony Truscott moved into the outright lead by defeating the rapidly improving 10-year-old Brett Oakley. Tony managed to gain a positional advantage with the white pieces, but had to be careful as Brett, tenacious as ever, created tactical complications with his well-placed rooks. Tony held his nerve and when the dust settled, he was able to convert his endgame advantage into a win. This victory leaves Tony as outright leader with the near-perfect score of 4.5/5, but with Allan Fossey and CM David Beaumont just behind him on 4/5 (and two rounds still to play), the club championship is still up for grabs! On board 3, CM David Beaumont used his wealth of experience in conducting a positional squeeze over improving member Zaichic Turner, creating threat after threat before finally cashing in to obtain a winning advantage. Please see the attachment for full Round 5 results. Congratulations, all!
Round 6 – 8:00PM Wednesday 3 December:

Crosstable R4 of the 2025 Club Championship played on Wed night November 19
Please find attached the Round 4 crosstable for the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship, played on Wednesday night, November 19.
Round 4 Summary:
Board 1 featured a showdown between co-leaders Jai Turner and Tony Truscott, a potentially pivotal fixture in deciding the winner of this years’ club championship! The two didn’t disappoint, producing an exciting display of chess wherein Jai as white established a strong initiative in the opening and early middle-game. However, Tony defended stoically, finding several great resources and before long it seemed Jai’s attack had begun to run out of steam. A pawn or two ahead in material, it was now Tony who was pushing for the win, before offering a draw that was largely influenced by time trouble and the complicated nature of the position! Jai was more than happy to share the point, so with this draw Jai and Tony remain outright leaders on 3.5/4! Another terrific battle occured on board 2 between club president Mark C Stokes and long-time RCC member Allan Fossey; the two players traded blows and pieces all the way to an endgame in which Mark had two distant, well-advanced pawns to Allan’s lone rook! In mutual time trouble, both players missed chances to win this complicated game and a draw was finally reached with bare kings on the board. On board 3, CM David Beaumont was black against prodigious young talent James Xia, showing great composure in winning a close game courtesy of an extra tempo in a complicated endgame. Please see the attachment for full results of the round. With two players sharing the lead on 3.5/4 and another 3 players on 3/4, the 2025 club championship is wide open with 3 rounds left to play!

Crosstable R3 of the 2025 Club Championship played on Wed night November 12
Please find attached the Round 3 crosstable for the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship, played last Wednesday night, November 12.
Round Summary:
There are now two outright leaders after 3 rounds of the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship! Jai Turner and Tony Truscott both won their round 3 games to move to a perfect 3/3. Well done, guys! On board 1, CM David Beaumont opted for the dynamic Austrian Attack against Jai Turner’s Pirc, and after some good opening play by both sides, a long, complicated battle ensued. Jai ultimately held his nerve as the endgame emerged and capitalised on a couple of inaccuracies by David to walk away with the full point. Yet another interesting game between these two strong players! Tony Truscott had white against Rohan Pyne on board 2, and after a long pause on moves 1 and 2, eventually decided on employing the English. An opening mistake from Rohan soon saw Tony trap and win a piece, however black managed to stay in the game courtesy of positional control of white’s knights and it was not clear how Tony would eventually break through. As a result, Tony decided to sacrifice the piece back to free up his position, and the resulting position, whilst now equal in material, proved to be advantageous for white as Tony scored the win. This was an inspired practical decision from Tony that is a reminder not to be too materially-focussed! Club president Mark C Stokes took advantage of some careless opening moves from Martin Post to quickly score the win, bolstering his chances of a deep finish in the tournament. Martin will be hoping to put this game behind him and will surely be a stronger player for the remainder of the tournament. Young gun James Xia outclassed Nithin Varghese on board 4 with the black pieces, proving that he is a legitimate chance of winning the tournament, and certainly one of the favourites for Best Junior. Another immense young talent in Brett Oakley scored a fine victory as black against club stalwart Max Kershaw, this win moving Brett to 2/3 and close to the leaders. Sophia Xu and Chris Basiaco played out a fighting draw on board 6, a fine result for the lower-rated Chris. Greg Orme scored another win for black on board 7, against Simon Levy in an interesting encounter that lasted long into the night. Nikola Maljkovic had a strong performance to score his first win of the tournament by defeating Don Moore, and Zaichic Turner moves to a very respectable 2/3 by getting the better of Jim Porter on board 9. Improving player Libero Ceccherini will be pleased with his efforts in defeating talented youngster Braeden Levy, and on board 11, 8-year-old Iris Wang pounced on some tactical opportunities to score the full point against Ryan Xia. Tony Weller got his campaign underway after a rough start, scoring a win with black against new member Cedric Schaffer. With 4 rounds still to play, it’s not too late for Tony and many others to make a deep run in this tournament! Youngsters Leo Betty and Dylan Pu met on board 13, victory this time going to Dylan. To round out 14 boards of action, new member Adam Duncan scored the 9th victory for black on the evening by showing he is a quick learner in out-maneuvering Albert Schaus. Well done, all!
If you missed Round 3 last Wednesday night, you can still enter this week and we will give you up to two half point byes for R1 – R3 – just be in F Block by 7:45pm to be included in the R4 pairings. R4 will begin at 8pm this Wed night November 19. Look forward to another round of exciting chess!

Crosstable R1 of the 2025 Club Championship played on Wed night October 29
Please find attached the Round 1 crosstable for the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship, played on Wednesday night, October 29.
Round Summary:
The final tournament on the RCC calendar for 2025 is the marquee event – the Club Championship! A field of 32 players presented for Round 1 of the 2025 Redcliffe Club Championship; it was great to see such strong numbers! It is a testament to the depth in both numbers and talent at the club that there is no clear favourite to take out this tournament, with the likes of the experienced Jai Turner and David Beaumont facing tough competition from rising young stars including James Xia, Brett Oakley and Simon Yousafi.
Top seed CM David Beaumont got his campaign off to a great start by defeating long-time RCC member Tony Weller in an interesting game that saw David win an exchange early in the game, only for Tony to gain counterplay by virtue of a strong knight and bishop-pair before eventually winning the exchange back, albeit down a pawn. This was enough for David to eventually grind out the win in the endgame. Despite the large rating gap, Max Kershaw put up a great fight against Jai Turner on board 2, testing Jai the entire game before coming up short in a tricky king-knight-pawn endgame. This was a great start to Jai’s campaign and perhaps he’ll be pleased with a long, tough game in Round 1. It was great to see returning member Tony Truscott appear mere seconds before the pairings were finalised, a surprise entrant who also walked away from the night with a victory, this time with white against the dangerous Simon Yousafi, displaying clinical endgame technique to secure the full point. Sophia Xu, the clear favourite for the Best Woman trophy in this tournament, found herself in a tough spot out of the opening against veteran Allan Fossey. Allan converted this early advantage into a win and is now poised for a showdown with one of the top seeds in the next round. Rohan Pyne exacted revenge for his last-start loss to Nikola Maljkovic, this time walking away with the win by virtue of a positional squeeze in the English opening. The longest game of the night occurred on board 6 between Simon Levy and club president Mark C Stokes which saw Mark, in somewhat characteristic fashion, almost spoil a large advantage with a double-pawn “sacrifice” on victory’s doorstep allowing Simon to fight back albeit to no avail; certainly a very exciting game! Two of the most promising 10-year-old chess talents in the country squared off on board 7, with James Xia managing to overpower Brett Oakley in an imbalanced endgame, his two rooks eventually proving too strong for Brett’s rook and knight. New RCC member Sonny Mantello, yet another talented junior, showed endgame composure beyond his years in shepherding his extra pawns to promotion against Martin Post, despite being down an exchange. Zaichic Turner played a nice game to beat Don Moore on board 9, and Braeden Levy scored a quick win with black against Khan Otineru. Chris Basiaco took down Jim Porter on board 11 courtesy of prudent opening preparation, and Iris Wang returned to the club after a spell and her efforts were rewarded with victory over Cedric Schaffer. The improving Libero Ceccherini scored a composed victory over Albert Schaus on board 13, and the only draw of the night occured between 7-year-old portrait artist Fedra Simic, and Dylan Pu. New member James Whitfried enjoyed victory over enthusiastic youngster Leo Betty on board 15, and to round out 16 boards, Ryan Xia continues to prove he is much more than just a “bye-breaker” by taking down Adam Duncan in control of the white pieces. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to all for providing a great night of entertainment!
If you missed Round 1 last night, you can still enter next week and we will give you a half point bye for R1- just be in F Block by 7:45pm to be included in the R2 pairings. R2 will begin at 8pm next Wed night November 5. Look forward to another round of exciting chess!
