Please find attached the Round 6 (final round) crosstable and results for the 2026 Lou Wilkinson Memorial, played on Wednesday night, June 10.
Round 6 (final round) Summary:
Jai Turner defeated Aaron Hamilton to win the tournament by 2 full points with a picket-fence 6/6! An opening trap by Jai surprised Aaron who was unable to defend against various serious threats and justifiably resigned after just 10 moves! This “Paul Morphy-esque” “miniature” was made all the more remarkable by the fact that not a single piece nor pawn was captured by either side, yet Jai’s position was still beyond crushing. Congratulations, Jai, on yet another tournament victory at Rothwell!
The minor placings were confirmed with results on boards 2 and 3; “fortune favours the brave” as Rohan Pyne sacrificed a Rook for a well-placed Knight and pawn against David Beaumont. The resulting position, whilst technically advantageous for Black (Beaumont), required careful defence with White liking his chances courtesy of an active army of Rook, Bishop and Queen. Amidst mounting time trouble, David blundered the game. This sees Rohan finish in a tie for second with David (4/6) and Allan Fossey, who notched up his 4th win of the tournament by overcoming tenacious youngster Brett Oakley, being made to work all the way to the end in a long battle.

Next Tournament – 2026 Redcliffe Rapid Championship – 8:00PM Wednesday 24 June (rounds 1-3), 8:00PM Wednesday 1 July (rounds 4-6):
The 2026 Redcliffe Rapid Championship begins next Wednesday night, June 24. This 6-round 10min+3sec rapid tournament will be held across two consecutive Wednesday nights, concluding on Wednesday night, July 1.
The pairings will be finalised at 8PM sharp so please try to be at Rothwell by 7:45PM to ensure a timely start to the rounds. Feel free to arrive as early as 7PM for social chess!
