Crosstable R2 of the 2026 Summer Swiss played on Wed night Feb 4
Please find attached the Round 2 crosstable for the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss, played on Wednesday night, February 4.
The new-year numbers continue to grow, with 32 players fronting up for round 2 on Wednesday night, bringing the total entries for the tournament to 36! It is exciting to see so many new faces tossing their hat in the ring to test their wit against the host of regular members.
Round 2 Summary:
Top seed David Pando played black against Filip Simic, with both players opting for solid positional setups. As the middlegame progressed, it appeared that the position was roughly equal, however David had a growing advantage on the clock, with Filip down to less than 10 minutes of his allotted time. This proved pivotal, as David was soon able to capitalise as the position complicated and when the dust settled, he converted a technically won endgame into the full point.
The upset of the round occurred on board 2, where Allan Fossey dismantled David Beaumont with a swashbuckling King’s Indian, one of the sharpest variations in chess. Allan won an exchange early in the game courtesy of a tactical sequence, and appeared to be well on his way to victory. David managed to threaten counterplay with several well-coordinated knight maneuvers. Aware of the potential for imminent danger, Allan made the pragmatic decision to sacrifice the exchange back, the resulting trades giving him connected passed pawns. Allan converted his endgame advantage in fine style, using his bishop to trap David’s knight on the edge of the board. You can see this game and several more on the RCC website at: City of Redcliffe Chess Club Inc.
On board 3, Rohan Pyne was white against Tony Truscott. Tony countered Rohan’s Botvinnik English with a solid setup featuring pawns on c5, d6 and e6. The players began expanding on opposite sides of the board, with Tony countering Rohan’s kingside pushes with his own on the queenside. Several exchanges resulted in great optical changes to the position, Rohan now having connected passed pawns on the b and c file but his progress was stymied by Tony’s pawn mass in the centre of the board. Uncertain of the best way to proceed, Rohan blundered a pawn but managed to complicate the position. Tony played calmly, defending against an array of tactics and eventually finished the game through some nice tactics of his own after Rohan blundered once more, albeit this time in severe time trouble.
The remaining boards also featured plenty of fighting chess, with several games lasting long into the evening, well past the bedttime of many! The only draw of the evening occured between Tony Weller and Aaron Hamilton. It is refreshing to see such enterprising chess on display! Well done to all the winners!
