Crosstable R1 of the 2026 Summer Swiss played on Wed night Jan 28

Please find attached the Round 1 crosstable for the 2026 Redcliffe Summer Swiss, played on Wednesday night, January 28.

Round 1 Summary:

Last Wednesday night saw Redcliffe Chess Club re-open its doors for the commencement of the 2026 chess season. The first event on the calendar is the Summer Swiss, a 6 round ACF and QJ rated classical tournament featuring a time control of 60mins plus 20secs per move or 30+30 for the juniors. The attendance numbers continue to be strong, with a total of 27 players presenting for the first round. The field was headlined by top seeds David Pando (ACF 1995) and CM David Beaumont (1767 ACF), and with CM Tony Dowden and Jai Turner (both under-rated 1700s) likely to join the tournament for round 2, this promises to be a very competitive affair with plenty of depth in the field.

On board 1, Tony Weller was sceptical of the Vega pairing system as he was yet again matched against the top seed, this time having the black pieces against David Pando. From the little the author saw of this game, it appeared that David obtained a positional advantage during the middle-game, fragmenting Tony’s pawn structure and, whilst materially equal, it became a difficult position for Tony to hold against a strong player. David was his usual clinical self in converting this advantage into the full point to start his 2026 on a winning note. The top boards didn’t feature a single upset as the other top seeds also justified their higher ratings in winning their games. In fact, there were no drawn games across the 13 boards! Well done to all the winners and thank you to Cedric Schaffer for selflessly accepting his round 1 bye due to the odd number of players. A friendly reminder to all that pairings will be finalised at 8PM sharp each round!

Round 2 – 8:00PM Wednesday 4 Feb:

Round 2 will begin at 8pm this Wednesday night, February 4. Look forward to another round of exciting chess!

The pairings will be finalised at 8PM sharp so please try to be at Rothwell by 7:45PM to ensure a timely start to the round. Feel free to arrive as early as 7PM for social chess! If you missed Round 1 last Wednesday night but would like to be included in the pairings for Round 2, you can still play the tournament with a half-point bye for Round 1.
