Rapid Chess Crosstable after R3, Peninsula Open results + RIP NORM BRAYBROOKE

At the half way mark of the 2025 Redcliffe Chess Club Inc Rapid Chess Championship, we have just 2 players in the 30 player field on a perfect score of 3 out of – Tony Dowden and Jai Turner. They will meet each other in R4 this Wednesday night July 2. Another 11 players are just 1 point behind the co-leaders, and with 3 rounds to be played, anyone of them could still win the event!

See the attached crosstable to see the scores of all 30 players so far.

We had a record turn out of 22 Redcliffe Chess Club members take part in the just completed weekender, the 60th Peninsula Open, which was fantastic to see! Our players did our Club proud with some fantastic results in the 92 player field. Yes, the 92 player field! A big thank-you to our Club Secretary Max Kershaw too for being the arbiter up in J Block and for doing such an outstanding job up there too. Cheers Max!

Redcliffe’s David Beaumont did incredibly well to finish =1st on 5.5/6 with IM Brodie McClymont – and Brodies’s first Chess Club was Redcliffe Chess Club too! David won $750 for equal first plus the bonus $100 on offer for the best score by a Redcliffe player, so a grand total of $850! A hearty congratulations to David!

And just half a point behind Brodie and David was Jai Turner on 5/6! Jai was undefeated with 4 wins and 2 draws and he shared 3rd place with Jayden Ooi, Callum Gray and David Pando. Jai also won Rating Group A outright, to win a total of $262.50! Well done Jai!

And just another half a point back on 4.5/6 was Tony Dowden! Tony won the prize of $100 for best score by a Senior player 65 years of age or older! Another top result for our Club.

Thank you to all 22 Club Members for taking part – let’s see if we can break this record at our next Redcliffe Chess Club Week-Ender, the 2025 Leo Wilkinson Memorial, on Saturday September 27 and Sunday September 28. Once again, Redcliffe Chess Club Members will be able to play in this Week-Ender for the bargain basement entry fee of just $21! Circle September 27 and September 28 for chess on your calendar now!

Our next Redcliffe Chess Club Committee Meeting is on Wednesday night July 16 at 6:30pm in F Block and all Club Members are invited to attend. If you have a matter you would like raised, email me or Max Kershaw, our Club Secretary. We will add your matter to the agenda. You can see the Agenda now on the Redcliffe Chess Club Inc Website: https://redcliffechessclub.com.au

Wednesday night July 16 will also be the first round of our next ACF classically and QJ rated event, the 2025 Norm Braybrooke Memorial, over 7 consecutive Wednesday nights. This event will feature special trophies for both the winner and for the Best Junior, thanks to kind sponsorship from Norm’s family. Norm helped run the very 1st Peninsula Open in the early 1960’s and we just ran its 60th edition on the weekend! Norm passed away recently, on Sunday June 15, at 92 years of age. It is so fitting that our next Classical Event will be the Norm Braybrooke Memorial. The Adult entry fee for this 7 round event will be just $20 and the Junior entry fee will again be just $6, making Redcliffe Chess Club Inc the most reasonably priced Chess Club in Australia! Do not miss the 2025 Norm Braybrooke Memorial, starting on Wednesday night July 16.

See you all this Wednesday night July 2 for the second half of the 2025 Rapid Chess Championship, with 13 players still in contention for 1st place! If you cannot play, please text Mark by 7:30pm and he will take you out of the pairings – no one wants to win a game on forfeit!
