Crosstable after R5 of NB Classic played on Wed Aug 7, Flyer for LWM On Sat Sept 21 & Sun Sept 22

Please find attached the Crosstable after R5 was played last Wednesday night, August 7, of the 2024 Norm Braybrooke Classic.

If you look closely, you will notice the 2 leaders at the end of R4, Tony Weller and Mark C Stokes, both lost their R5 games! Tony lost to Allan Fossey and Mark lost to Jai Turner!

So we have 3 new co-leaders after R5 was completed last week: Jai Turner, Allan Fossey and Austin Hamilton, who are all on 4 points out of 5. With Jai away in Darwin this Wednesday night, it is likely that either Allan or Austin will win the 2024 Norm Braybrooke Classic, but this is not certain, as another 8 players are within 1 point of the lead. R6 this Wednesday night, August 14, should produce some exciting chess! If you cannot make this round, please let me know by 7:30pm on Wednesday night so I can leave you out of the computer pairings as no-one present on the night wants to win on forfeit!

I have also once again attached the flyer for Redcliffe Chess Club’s next Week Ender, the 2024 Leo Wilkinson Memorial, here at Rothwell on Saturday September 21 and Sunday September 22. As a 2024 Redcliffe Chess Club Member, you can enter this event for just $20, an absolute bargain basement price for a Week Ender!

Tony Weller and Mark C Stokes ventured north to Bundaberg over the weekend to play in their weekender, which was won by Ben Leong on 5.5/6 – he had to beat his younger brother Joel in the last round to win the $1000 1st prize. Mark managed to score 4/6 and collected a total of $200 in prizemoney but Tony missed out on a prize this time with his score of 3/6. Tony and Mark both intend to play in Bundaberg’s next Week Ender in early November as well as it is such a fun and well organized event to play in.

Mark created a new 4 move checkmate in R1 against young Nash Carroll, playing the Staunton Gambit in the Dutch Defence. Here is this brilliant win by Mark for you all to enjoy:

See you on Wednesday night for the lucky last round, R6, at 7:45pm. But come along from 7pm for some friendly games if you wish. Remember to let me know by text message if you need a bye for R6 because you cannot come by 7:30pm on Wednesday night : 0431 419 136

Cheers Mark C Stokes 0431 419 136
