Victorian Chess League? – Tell ’em they’re dreamin’!!
What a crazy idea coming from Victoria?
Why would we want our kids aspiring to play for their local team?
That would be copying AFL, NRL, Soccer, Hockey etc. Everyone knows that doesn’t work in those sports.
The only way for Australia to keep churning out Super Grandmasters is our system, which is the envy of the entire world – and that is endless weekenders.
And on top of that we have eliminated “preparation for the next round” by our blessed increments.
104 people wait for one game to finish and then the next round goes up straight away.
Thus eliminating any prep. for the next round.
Absolutely brilliant!!
Who in their right mind wants to prep. for the next round. Just sit down and play.
That’s the way Kasparov used to do it.
Bringing in a “League” would bring in business partnerships, trainers, managers – and the worst thing of all – we would destroy our record of having 99% of Juniors drop out after High School Teams finishes.
Do we seriously want Teams of 18-30 year-olds playing chess in Australia??
You would have to be stark raving mad to want that.
And of course you run the risk of having adult females playing chess in Australia.
We are now very proud of our 99% male adult attendance rates at weekenders.
We would be taking a very big risk here.

“My idea of having The Victorian Chess League was rejected out of hand, the 4 most beautiful words possible ”The Victorian Chess League” ok maybe not as nice as the German Bundesliga or the Polish Ekstraliga or the Czech Extraliga or the Catalan Honor Division or the Chinese Chess League (Xiangqi) or United Kingdom Four Nations Chess League or the Austrian Bundesliga or The Turkish Chess League or The Russian Premier League, sadly 12 million people of Victoria will never see The Victorian Chess League! At least Billions live in countries where they can support there Chess Teams proudly and honorably and people still wonder why Chess in Australia is going no where! Will they ever change? Will a Ladies Chess League change there minds?”
