Final Round crosstable of the 2025 Club Championship played on Wed night December 10
David Beaumont is the 2025 Redcliffe Chess Club champion!
CM Beaumont defeated Tony Truscott in a high-stakes, winner-takes-all contest on board 1. This caps off a great year of chess for David, having already been victorious in the Peninsula Open and the QLD Seniors championship earlier this year. Congratulations, David!
Round 7 Summary:
David countered Tony’s pet Colle System with an early c5 and kingside-fianchetto and whilst Tony developed a significant space advantage on the queenside, his pieces began to lack coordination. David’s well-marshalled troops started to target key squares and pawns in the white camp, using the open a and c files expertly. A well-timed b5 advance undermined white’s pawn front and David was soon up a pawn and in complete control of the position. A crafty “zwischenzug” Ne4! saw David put one hand on the trophy as Tony’s chances were reduced to swindles. David held his composure and the result was soon beyond salvage for Tony, justifiably resigning the game in an endgame where black’s bishop-pair and two extra pawns would have been too much to handle for his rook.
This was Tony’s first and only loss for the tournament, coming up just short of the title but still managing a share of second place with pre-tournament favourite Jai Turner, who despite a strong campaign will have to wait another year for a chance to win an elusive club championship. (Jai has won just about every other tournament this year!) Congratulations to Tony and Jai for a fantastic tournament!
Please see the attachments for full round 7 results and the final crosstable. Well done to all players for their efforts across the tournament, both over the chess board and in ensuring the club continues to provide a welcoming environment.
