Crosstable R6 of the 2025 Mike Dyer Memorial played on Wed night October 22
Please find attached the Round 6 (final round) crosstable for the 2025 Mike Dyer Memorial, played last Wednesday night, October 22.
Round Summary:
Congratulations to ChengYi (James) Xia for winning the 2025 Mike Dyer Memorial with a great score of 5/6! James is one of a host of bright young stars emerging from the QLD chess scene, and at just 10 years old, it will be exciting to track his progress over the coming years. Well done James! The final round was always going to be interesting, with 3 players tied for the lead on 4/5 (James, Jai Turner, and Allan Fossey). On Board 1, James defeated Allan with the white pieces, with Allan sacrificing a pawn early in his Scandinavian Defence but not managing to gain adequate compensation. James was eventually able to convert a winning rook-and-pawn endgame to guarantee himself at least a share of first place. Jai Turner needed to defeat David Beaumont with black on Board 2, but only managed a draw, as the two experienced players battled it out in a long, complicated game. This draw was enough for Jai to finish in a tie for second place (4.5/6) with young Brett Oakley, another promising junior. Brett got the better of Ryan Xia with black on Board 3. In game #10,000 against each other, Mark C Stokes had a better position against Tony Weller, but a crucial misstep in the latter stages of the game cost him the full point, with the two veterans ultimately sharing the point. Greg Orme outclassed Martin Post on Board 5, and Nikola Maljkovic played a strong game to defeat Fedra Simic. Zaichic Turner, an improving player, managed to score the full point with the black pieces against Matthew Statham on Board 7, and Sophia Xu played a nice game to beat Dylan Pu. On the final two boards, Ryan Aumeller won with black against Leo Betty, and new member Adam Duncan got his Redcliffe chess career off to a great start by defeating Don Moore. Congratulations all for a wonderful tournament!
