Crosstable R5 of the 2025 Mike Dyer Memorial played on Wed night October 15
Please find attached the Round 5 crosstable for the 2025 Mike Dyer Memorial, played last Wednesday night, October 15.
Round Summary:
The results sheet of the 5th round of the Mike Dyer Memorial reads like that of a typical round of a “super-Grandmaster” tournament, with 6 of the 14 games ending peacefully in a draw! Three of these draws occurred on the top 3 boards; Burgeoning talent Jai Turner held former NZ Olympiad representative CM Tony Dowden to a draw with the black pieces. Allan Fossey and Mark C Stokes’ game on Board 2 was a see-sawing affair, with both players perhaps missing chances to push for the full point. Brett Oakley continues to show enormous potential, with the 10-year-old drawing against the experienced CM David Beaumont. It was a productive evening for the Xia family with James Xia scoring a win against Martin Post, and James’ father, Ryan, winning with the black pieces against Fedra Simic on Board 5. James joins Allan Fossey and Jai Turner as joint-leaders on 4/5 but, with another 5 players trailing the lead by just a half point (3.5/5) and one round still to play, there are still many potential winners for this tournament! Aaron Hamilton and Greg Orme tested each other on Board 6, with a long game eventually ending in a draw, and on Board 7, Tony Weller defeated Nithin Varghese. Jim Porter scored a nice win with black against his friend Max Kershaw, and, two more draws occured on Boards 9 and 10, with Zaichic Turner, Nikola Maljkovic, Rex Scarf and Chris Basiaco all sharing their respective points. Dylan Pu played a nice game to beat Libero Ceccherini on Board 11 in what was the only win for the white pieces this round! Rapidly improving youngster Leo Betty got the better of Don Moore on Board 12, eventually coming away with a well-deserved win. Sophia Xu, one of only two female players in the field, won with black against James Prowse, and in another victory for the black pieces, Jay Otineru bested Khan Otineru on Board 14. Congratulations, all!
