Queensland U/18s hit the WALL!

Filip Simic of RCC Inc., 2nd in the Australian U/18 Problem Solving Championships 2024.

———————————————————————————————————–

Congratulations once again to Jayden Ooi for placing equal first in the Australian Junior Championships in Adelaide. He is now clearly the Junior to catch in Queensland. Jayden showed that he can mix it with the best in the country and come equal first.

He left the rest of the Queensland “Young Guns” back on 5 points. In tie-break order, Filip Simic, Zerui Xing CM Benjamin Leong and newcomer, Cameron William.

This group actually scored much better in the Qld. Adult Championships! Which may just be the problem.
With the dropping out of local GMs and IMs from the Queensland chess scene, all these aspiring players have to play is each other. Hence the 2.5 point difference between Jayden and the 5 pointers.

On the other hand the southern U/18s have been travelling overseas to Asian Junior events for tough opposition.

The recent Australian Championships had 0 Grandmasters out of a possible 10!

Pouring our very limited cash resources into U/1600 players is beginning to reap dividends Australia wide. But not in a good way.

Solution: Start paying appearance fees to our top players and stop “paying” AMATEUR players.

Gold Coast Open:

Venue: Pacific Fair (free)

Format:

Top Section – 20 players in 3 day 6 round FIDE rated event. With appearance fees and $s per full point.

Second Section – Open to all not playing in Top Section. $60 entry Adults, $40 entry Juniors.

Highest scoring Adult and Junior go into Top Section next year. No cash prizes.

Every parent I talk to is quite clear in that they want the best possible competition for their child.

THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN RATING PRIZES. STOP BURNING PRECIOUS CASH. THESE PEOPLE ARE THE CLIENTS!

LISTEN TO THEM.
