Christmas message from Club President, Mark C Stokes

We had a fun Free Pizza Night , an exciting Trophy presentation and  a fun Ten Teams of 2 competition, made up of 1 Adult and 1 Junior, after our well attended AGM on Wednesday night December 20, our last chess night of 2023!
At the AGM, the following list of 2024 City of Redcliffe Chess Club Inc members were elected unopposed:
President: Mark C Stokes  ( 0431 419 136 ), Treasurer: Tony Weller, Secretary: Max Kershaw, Website Editor: Kerry Corker, Committee Person 1: Jai Turner and Committee Person 2: Nikola Maljkovic.
The following list of players won Trophies in our 2023 FIDE, ACF and QJ rated Redcliffe Chess Club Inc Club Championship:
1st: David Beaumont  2nd: Nathanael Young  3rd: Mark C Stokes  Best Junior: Max Phillips (also =3rd), Best Junior U1300 ACF: Nikola Maljkovic, Best Adult U1500 ACF: Max Windsor, Best Junior U1000 ACF: Sophia Xu, Best Adult U1000 ACF: Chris Basiaco,                            Best Junior U700 ACF: Iris Wang, Best ACF Unrated: Grace Wang, President’s Book Prize Award: Dylan Pu. Congratulations to all the trophy winners! The Club Champion, David Beaumont, who scored 4.5/5, mentioned how tough the games were that he had against Mark C Stokes, against Elizabeth Williams, against Nathanael Young, against Max Phillips and against Daniel Woodrow! Nathael Young had a great tournament winning 4 out of his 5 games and Max Phillips won the Best Junior Trophy and a lovely chess set as well!
At 8pm, as the AGM was coming to a close, the Pizzas arrived and not one was left uneaten!
Then the Ten Teams of 2 were drawn out of two boxes, one box with only the Junior names and one box with just the Adult names. In the games, the Juniors made the first moves, the Adults made the next moves, then the Juniors made the next moves, etc and the games were played with 7 minutes each plus 3 seconds a move on the clock.
After 3 rounds, only 3 Teams were on a perfect score of 3/3, so we had play offs to determine the Champion Team of Two of the night! The three teams on a perfect score were Team 1, Kiamehr Baneshi and Nathanael Young, Team 6, Max Phillips and Tyson Walker and Team 9, Tony Weller and our newest International Master, Sravan Renjith. And it was Team 9, Tony Weller and Sravan Renjith that emerged victorious, winning a container of lychees and a container of cherry tomatoes! It was indeed a fun competition, played in great spirit by all and with lots of friendly banter between the teams!
We will re-open in 2024 on Wednesday night January 24 at 7pm and R1 of the ACF and QJ rated Summer Swiss, with a $20 entry fee for Adults and a $6 entry fee for Juniors, will start at 7:45pm. Don’t forget to Direct Deposit your entry fee to the Redcliffe Chess Club Inc Westpac Account: BSB: 734208   Account Number: 070051 and please use your name as the reference. See you there!

PS Don’t forget to visit our regularly updated Redcliffe Chess Club Website, thanks to the tireless work of Kerry Corker:
I would like to thank everyone here tonight for making 2023 a very good year for Redcliffe Chess Club Inc. Our numbers are up each week compared to last year, which has been great to see.
Much of the credit goes to Kerry Corker, our Website Editor and Junior Coach, for these increased numbers. Kerry is now on holidays but will be back next year.
Our Weekly ACF and QJ rated 5 and 6 round Swiss Events were well attended, with 20- 30 players taking part on most weeks. Our 2023 Club Championship was also well attended with over 30 players and it will be FIDE, ACF and QJ rated.
Our Junior players have improved their standard of play markedly during the year and our Adult players know they will need to play their best when playing a Junior. Iris Wang improved over 300 ACF Rating Points in the December list, Sophia Xu and Nikola Maljkovic were causing upset win after upset win just about every week, just ask Allan Fossey and Mark C Stokes about this, Max Phillips had a great Club Championship and a great year, finishing in the placings in the CAQ Junior Blitz Championships, Filip Simic proved most difficult to beat each and every week, the continually improving Dylan Pu competed in every event every week, never missing a night,  Jacques De Villiers scored 50% in  the 2023 Club Championship , Jordan Mellors defeated the ACF 891 rated Sam Meder in R1 of the Club Championship, Grace Wang defeated the 1070 ACF rated Simon Levy in R5 of the Club Cship, Elizabeth Williams gave the top seed 1952 ACF rated David Beaumont a big scare in R2 of the Club Cship, Braeden Levy is one not to take lightly, just ask his Dad Simon and James Chengi Yi Xia won the Australian Junior U8 Championship. You can see why every game on a Wednesday night is a battle from move 1!
I would like to publicly thank our 2023 Committee Members, Treasurer Tony Weller, Secretary Max Kershaw, and Website Editor Kerry Corker for their help in planning our events and always  attending our bi monthly Committee Meetings. With their help, The Redcliffe Chess Club is now Incorporated and Annual Return to the Department of Fair Trading is being completed tomorrow. Allan Fossey also helped the committee on a regular basis and set up our sign-in roster to make life easier for all of us.
We hope that 2024 might even be bigger and better than 2023, with 2 Big Open Weekenders where Club Members can enter for just $20 planned already, the popular Quicker Chess Nights with just gold coin entry fees on the first Wednesday night of each month to continue, the $20 Adult Entry Fee and $6 Junior Entry Fee for our six round Swiss events to continue with no price increases at all – We may well be the cheapest Chess Club in the country and another Inter Club or two in the planning stages.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all, for those travelling to Adelaide for the Aust Champs from Jan 2 to Jan 11 the very best of luck and ditto for our Juniors in the Australian Juniors in Adelaide from Jan 13! Bring home some trophies to Qld!
We will re-open for 2024 on Wednesday night January 24 at 7pm, with R1 of our ACF and QJ rated Summer Swiss starting just after 7:30pm.
Kind Regards    Mark C Stokes    0431 419 136      markcstokes@hotmail.com
