2,200 schools and 74,000 players – no money in Teams events?!

“With 2,200 participating schools and more than 74,000 players, Basman was running the largest chess tournament on earth”

from an interesting New In Chess 5/2023 article about the late IM Michael Basman who drew a 76 move game against Botvinnik.

It becomes apparent as you read the article that he didn’t approach chess organization from a chess player’s mindset.

He couldn’t afford to – he was running the biggest chess tournament on earth!
