Asian U/7 Allegro Champs. RCC’s Kaisar and Aidan do it tough in Uzbekistan. Classical FIDE starts today.

Home field advantage proved pivotal for Team Uzbekistan, which ended up winning the 17th Asian Schools Championship in Rapid chess yesterday – picking up 4 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals across 12 categories of play (U7-U17). Local WFM Umida Omonova was crowned Asian Schools Rapid Champion among girls.

Mongolia was the surprise breakout nation with 4 golds and 1 silver – including the coveted Asian Schools Rapid Champion title for 18th seed Ulziikhishig Khishigbat in a major upset. India came in third with 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze, whilst Sri Lanka and CFR picked up the remaining 2 gold medals with 1 each. This left the reining World Schools Champion Team Kazakhstan without any gold medals – albeit with 1 silver and 4 bronze ones.
Big shout out goes to New Zealand with a silver for Anne Xuduo Guo in the U7 girls Rapid competition. While Kaisar and Aidan didn’t medal for Team Australia, they gained invaluable experience that should hold them in good stead for the Classical chess tournament starting today.
