First since our last newsletter was the Darling Downs Open in Toowoomba which featured 92 players. The tournament was won by IM Brodie McClymont with 6/6 ahead of Aidan Brady on 5.5/6 with Benjamin Leong and Sam Grigg on 5/6.

The Gold Coast Open is the largest event on the calendar and was a fabulous event once again this year with 204 players taking part! The Premier Division saw the awarding of the Australian Champion title and was won by GM Temur Kuybokarov with 7/9, who then played on board 2 for the Australian Olympiad Team. GM Bobby Cheng and IM Rishi Sardana were =2nd with 6.5/9. The Major division was shared by Oleg Kitikov and Joe Chua with 6/7. Finishing in =3rd were Ekaterina Gratchev, Jay Weigall, Oliver McCarthy and Craig Stewart with 5.5/7. In the minor division, juniors dominated (as they often do!) with Matthew Lin scoring 6/6 to clinch the title. 2nd was shared by Isaac Liu, Mia Jigando, Eric Yang, Elaina Qiang, Mohan  Thandi, Michelle Lin, and Nathan Arav on 5/6.

The Queensland Junior Championships were held directly following the Gold Coast Open to make for a very busy week for many players! The under 14 to 18 division saw 48 players take part and some mammoth ties! Equal first were Oliver Strong, Kiamehr Baneshi, Joshua McCorkell, and Terrance Tang. Equal first for Under 16 were Jason Leitch, Benjamin Leong, Lachlan Wang, Alexavier Ly-Liu, and Nicholas Bond. Equal first under 14 were Max Phillips and Joshua Cooper. The Under 12 tournament was won by Bryan Yang with an impressive 7.5/8. The Under 10 title was shared by Calen Tang and Martin Sun with 7/8, whilst the Under 8 tournament was won by Zeqi Xing with a perfect 8/8.

Next up was the Peninsula Open, which saw 86 players take part. It was still fierce at the top, with a tie for first between IM’s Stephen Solomon and Brodie McClymont. 3rd was shared by Kelvin Finke, Jayden Ooi, Ben Peach, John Nothdurft, and Aiden Brady.

The Wendy Terry Memorial was  then held with 47 players being involved. IM Brodie McClymont kept his impressive series of weekend results going with an impressive performance to score 6/6 and win the title. IM Stephen Solomon was joined in 2nd place by youngster Micah Young.
