Tonight’s Chess.com RCC event

Due to an abundance of caution, Redcliffe Chess Club will be closed for over the board chess this Wednesday night August 11 and next Wednesday night August 18. We will re-open for over the board Chess with R1 of the Norm Braybrooke Classic on Wednesday night August 25.
Tom Maguire has once again kindly set up online chess tournaments for us to play in on Chess.com between 7pm and 9pm on Wednesday August 11 and Wednesday August 18. You can register to play after 6pm and the tournaments start at 7pm and finish at 9pm. You play as many games as you can at 8 minutes each plus 3 seconds a move – most people will play at least 5 games. If you win your games quickly, you will get to play more games in the two hours! It is just for fun but you are reminded not to use any computer assistance, outside help or opening books during these online games.

Hi everyone,
Here are the instructions for joining the online lockdown tournaments that will be happening for the next two weeks as the restrictions ease.
Firstly, if you haven’t already, create a chess.com account and apply for the online club by clicking here. Most people have already done this. Please include your name in this application – if you don’t, you won’t be accepted. Your account name will be linked to your real name in a document that only members of the club can see. That document is here.
After you have joined the online club, follow these steps:
1) Go to the live chess.com server – chess.com/live OR on the left, hover over “Play” and then select “Live Chess”
2) Click on the “Tournaments” tab at the top of the screen.
3) At the top should be “Redcliffe Arena Lockdown #1”.
Registration will open one hour prior to the beginning of the tournament, so 6pm.
The format is different to any in person tournament. It is an arena format, which means that as soon as you finish your game, it will pair you against someone else waiting, and prefer people on a similar amount of points. You also get more points if you build up streaks. Arena is an extremely popular format on lichess and on chess.com as well. You may wish to play one to familiarise yourself with the format. The time control is 8+3 and the tournament lasts from 7pm-9pm, which should give a minimum of 5 games and probably more. It is also possible to take breaks in between games if you so choose. You can temporarily withdraw from the event for as long as you want and rejoin with no consequences.
IMPORTANT – Engine use, reference to opening books or tablebases, or indeed any outside assistance at all will result in a permanent ban from both our club and chess.com. The rules are no different from in person chess in this regard.
